Join us for a panel discussion on opportunities and challenges for OTC desks in the cryptocurrency ecosystem today.
As cryptocurrency exchanges continue to proliferate and tackle some of the most visible challenges of crypto trading, a significant amount of trade volume (particularly between institutions) has been quietly growing through off-exchange OTC trading. In Circle’s 2018 year in review post they announced that through their OTC business alone, they’d made more than 10,000 OTC trades in 2018, with an estimated $24 billion in volume. Cumberland, the crypto arm of Chicago trading giant DRW, has been in operation since 2014, facilitating $100,000 minimum trades in over 40 cryptoassets.
While OTC desks can provide many opportunities for crypto traders — privacy, liquidity + flexibility across multiple exchanges, better access to trusted counterparties, reduced risk of moving prices with big transactions — they face challenges as well, with even more under-developed infrastructure and transparency than exchanges when compared to traditional stock and commodities markets.
